I had to return to find this tree after spotting it hiking down on a previous hike. The shape and dark background caught my eye. When I did return the light was beautiful. I love this one.

El Diente, Mt Wilson, Gladstone
One of my favorite views and a great hike to get there. Early in September when the aspens were barely getting started, the tundra above timberline had a nice golden hue enhanced by the late afternoon light.

The fours corners area is dominated by Native American lands. Many of the features we are drawn to photograph are sacred to them. On the Navajo website they ask that photographs be taken from the paved roads and ask that dirt access roads not be driven and that the peaks and ridges not be climbed or hiked. Unfortunately the request is being ignored and social media is promoting the abuse of this land unabated as the tribes do not have the resources to patrol these areas.
Please respect their wishes.

I made a quick trip to Albuquerque for a repair on the RV Sunday and stopped at Shiprock just before sunset. Nothing was happening in the sky but there was nice side light on the peak and back light on the ridge, I couldn’t resist a B&W. Shot two sheets of Ilford 100 on the 4x5, yet to be processed and then took this shot on the Fuji GFX 50s. GF 100-200 at 100mm, 1/6 sec at f/16, ISO 100.

What happened here? There are many places in the desert that are so intriguing. This scene obviously has a volcanic past. I happened to catch it right after a rain so the rock and large boulders were nicely saturated. This was shot with the Chamonix F2 4x5 on Velvia 50 a few years back in the Escalante area.

Early Fall
I’ve gotten most of my film back from the lab and had @alexburkephoto drum scan a few favorites. This is one of the drum scans shot on my Chamonix 4x5 with a 150mm on Ektar 100. I really enjoyed the early colors around here when there was still a lot of green in the cottonwoods but the scrub oak was full on red. This scene is a ten minute walk from our house.

This was taken last winter on Figueroa Mountain. A favorite tree, that until the misty fog rolled up the mountain and isolated it from the busy surroundings, proved to be an illusive subject. These two were rather still as they surfed this little wave in the fog so the pan worked. I was fortunate to arrive at the location for my Neowise outing earlier this week just in time to capture some beautiful light on Lizard Head Peak. Lizard Head is deemed one of the most difficult climbs in Colorado at 13,119’ and was first climbed in 1921 by Albert Ellingwood and Barton Hoag. It is said that in 1911 the head of the peak collapsed in an avalanche. A few weeks back my son, James and I hiked up to the base at 12,000’ and could see the evidence of dramatic volcanic activity and were impressed by the geology of the area. The soft and painterly characteristics of this image dramatically juxtapose the punch and wow factor of my comet photo but the quiet softness resonates with me.
